The tradition of exchanging wedding rings upon marriage has become so ingrained in our lives that we don’t even think why it is necessary. We perceive rings as an obligatory wedding attribute.
It is authentically known that for the first time rings appeared in Ancient Egypt. They were worn by the pharaohs and used as a seal, which served as confirmation of their will.
In ancient Rome, a ring on a person’s finger could determine which class he belonged to. Gold jewelry was allowed to be worn only by representatives of the upper class. Ordinary citizens wore rings made of silver, and slaves wore rings made of iron.
At the same time, the ceremony of betrothal appeared. It consisted in the fact that the groom brought the bride’s parents a ring made of metal. Thus, he took upon himself the obligation to provide for his family.
For the first time, the bride and groom began to exchange rings made of bronze in the second half of the 2nd century.
As today, Orthodox believers wore a wedding ring on the ring finger of their right hand, and Catholic ones on their left. Nowadays, spouses give each other rings, promising to be loving and faithful.
Christians believe that an engagement ring should be simple, without any embellishments. It is these rings that are most often chosen for the wedding ceremony. Recently, however, engagement rings adorned with precious stones have begun to come into fashion. Sometimes future spouses make them to order, wanting their rings to be unique. However, when putting a ring on the finger of a loved one, remember that it is not the size and the number of carats in the diamond that is important, but the sincerity of your feelings. The history of wedding rings does not end there, the jewelry industry annually offers customers more and more new types of exclusive rings and other types of jewelry.
